Revisiting our Wish List

As part of our Phase Two proposal we published our “wish list” of who we would ideally like to have subscribe to our developments. These firms and national oil companies provide the majority share of oil and gas production in the world. And as such, should we be successful in securing these producers we would have a large subscription base in which to draw our funding from. Again this would be the ideal situation for People, Ideas & Objects (PI&O).

One of the key deliverables of the Preliminary Specification is the geographic scope of the application. If we had the “wish list” as our subscribing base, then this geographic scope would replicate the geographic area of the subscribing producers. Its as simple and obvious as that, however something that maybe needs to be stated explicitly.

Once our subscribing producers have set the scope of the PI&O application during the Preliminary Specification; going back and adjusting the scope in the Detailed and Final Specification will be difficult, expensive and time consuming. In fact changing the scope of the application after the Preliminary Specification has been set is something that should not be done. Therefore the next opportunity for the community to adjust the scope of the application would be when the Final Specification is complete, and we begin the Preliminary Specification for the next iteration of development. In other words those that miss this opportunity to participate in defining the scope of the Preliminary Specification in the first iteration of development, may still participate in the community, however will have to wait to have their unique needs met in subsequent iterations of development.

Waiting has its costs, as has been stated here before, the additional costs of the late fees, and possibly the most costly aspect of missing out on the initial scope of the Preliminary Specification might be that of an outsider looking in. Some might argue that the scope of our wish list is too ambitious. An alternative scenario that I see forming is that the Preliminary Specifications scope is formed around the America’s. This being more controllable from the point of view of what is possible and probable. We have based our organization around the Houston area to deal with the determination of any scope of the application. Given time the wish list may become possible and probable, and maybe the reality of such an application won’t seem so impossible.

Phase Two Proposal

It seems odd to suggest that a start-up software company would have a multi-billion dollar capital project on hand as its first task. People, Ideas & Objects (PI&O) is such a start-up software company, however, we are also adopting many of the attributes of a project management organization. Undertaking a large project of this scale and scope is not something that is unusual for a project management office to undertake. Combining and focusing the resources of industry to build the software described in the Draft Specification therefore is not that unusual.

When we look at the task at hand from the project management perspective it doesn’t seem so out of place. Phase Two looks to build the Preliminary Specification and build the beginnings of the organizational infrastructure necessary to project manage the software development through the Detailed and Final Specifications. An organization with the people needed to carry the weight through the various phases of development and then through the subsequent iterations.

Most project management organizations are focused around an engineering task. Whether that is a building a gas plant, an offshore rig or some other asset that needs to be built to a certain specification. The project management organization is the ideal means to generate the one-off type of large scale development.

People, Ideas & Objects is engineering focused and fits this form as well. There is a few unique attributes that make this quite different from most project management organizations. The first is that there is a high level of maintenance of the software code. A large service organization will be needed to maintain the application on a day to day basis and this will be maintained by PI&O and through our proposed Hardware Policies & Procedures.

Secondly, most engineering focused projects are done for the ultimate ownership of the payor. PI&O is different as this project is initiated by myself, and therefore I have earned the Intellectual Property (IP) rights. That IP is needed to raise the fees from producers, organize the community and focus the financial resources on one solution.

Lastly ownership of PI&O has to remain third party to all of the producers. No other producer will be interested in using a solution that is owned and operated by Exxon, Shell or any other producer. This third party nature maintains an objective means in which to deal with the needs of all of the producers in a fair and equitable manner.

New Position, President


Thinking through the organizational structure of the People, Ideas & Objects management. I have come to the conclusion that with the work that we are undertaking here that it would be better to have some additional “bench strength” in the executive. That is why I am creating the position of President, a role that I was to previously fill, to help round out the team.

The position of president will be an officers position and will involve this individual providing their strengths in areas where the firm needs more resources. When we think about the type of work that we are undertaking, the probability that we are finding areas that need attention are many, and the manner of that attention is not minor in its importance. The ability to put an officer on the situation and get it up to speed quickly would be a great help to the organization.

So that is what we are going to do. The position of president of People, Ideas & Objects will be added to the list of individuals that we will be looking to add to the organization once we secure our budget. These positions are open to all that may wish to apply for them and are permanent full time, or available as secondment from our participating producers.

Budgets and Canadians


I’ve titled this post “Budget and Canadians” because it is the best example of this unique budget situation that I can highlight. The situation may occur in other jurisdictions, I an not aware of any other specific cases, and those cases will be a determination of the community through the development of the Preliminary Specification. This specific Canadian situation is something that I am intimately aware of and generally am able to predict the outcome of what will happen. Therefore I am writing about what I know and am reasonably sure what the community will decide in developing the Preliminary Specification.

There are two unique development requirements that are required for the Canadian marketplace. The first is a unique royalty regime and the second is the oil-sands developments. If we assume these two unique software developments cost in the area of ~ $100 million. And the Canadian marketplace produces approximately ~ 3.5 million barrels of oil per day. As a result of these facts, when the time comes for the community to decide the geographic scope of the People, Ideas & Objects application (a deliverable of the Preliminary Specification) Canada’s unique development needs will be an issue that needs to be resolved.

Looking at the issue critically from the communities point of view. $100 million in development costs divided by 3.5 million barrels per day is $28.57 / boe of a subsidy that Canadian producers would receive from the general development “pool” in order to meet these unique Canadian software development needs.

What I think needs to happen is the Canadian producers need to pay the basic fees that all producers are assessed in order to participate in the community. Then in order to ensure that the decision is made to include Canada as part of the geographical scope of the People, Ideas & Objects Preliminary Specification. Pay the additional $100 million in additional software development costs allocated over the base of subscribing Canadian producers. That is the Canadian producers, assuming you could achieve 100% subscription rates, would provide an additional $28.57 per barrel of oil equivalent in additional fees to offset these unique Canadian development costs.

Another alternative would be for Canadian producers to discuss with the Alberta and other governments to fund the costs of their unique royalty requirements. I have had discussions with the Alberta government on this point and I wish the industry luck in this endeavour.

It may be considered unreasonable for the community to undertake the unique development costs of any jurisdiction during the Preliminary Specification. As we can see these costs skew the total development costs materially, and as such will need to be addressed separately. I believe jurisdictions like Canada need to address this point prior to subscribing to the Preliminary Specification and have the commitments in hand to fund the unique development costs before they begin their participation. Otherwise they may be surprised at the decisions regarding the geographic scope of the application by the community.

Constraints and Opportunities

Yesterday’s post noted that the start-up software developer, as well as the established SAP and other software vendors, need to provide a comprehensive and compelling vision of how they propose to resolve the issues that producers face in the oil and gas industry. And that only People, Ideas & Objects have provided a comprehensive and compelling vision with the publication of the Draft Specification and the supporting documentation contained within this blog. People, Ideas & Objects vision is an opportunity for the oil and gas producer community to approach resolving its issues in an unconstrained manner.

We have talked about some of the constraints that are inherent in the software business on this blog before. And today I want to reiterate the two that are the greatest impediment to change in the software offering provided by the software vendor. Those two constraints are the software vendors customers and the software code itself. These are the two main causes of failure for most software companies in meeting the needs of their software users.

Simply, changes to the software code are the greatest costs to the software vendor and do not generate any unique revenue streams. Therefore changes are resisted by the software vendor; propagating any of these software changes to the population of customers and users escalates the costs of any change. Is it any wonder that these applications have remained static for all those years.

These and other forces have cemented the existing “established” software vendors offerings in concrete. An innovative oil and gas producer, as documented here in this blog, needs to have the agility in decision making processes and follow through with the appropriate processes that support innovation. These begin with the appropriate organizational structure supported by a dedicated software development capability.

By employing cloud computing and a cost plus software development model People, Ideas & Objects are structured to support the changes in the producer. We are motivated by change, designed to change, accommodate change, and change ultimately generates our revenues. Providing a change oriented software development capability is the purpose behind People, Ideas & Objects.

Free Riders and the Participation Bonus.

Free riders have been defined in wikipedia as

In economics, collective bargaining, psychology, and political science, "free riders" are those who consume more than their fair share of a public resource, or shoulder less than a fair share of the costs of its production. Free riding is usually considered to be an economic "problem" only when it leads to the non-production or under-production of a public good (and thus to Pareto inefficiency), or when it leads to the excessive use of a common property resource. The free rider problem is the question of how to limit free riding (or its negative effects) in these situations.
For the purpose of People, Ideas & Objects “free riders” is a serious problem that we have chosen to deal with in our Revenue Model. Simply our free rider problem is that many producer firms would feel their best approach to supporting People, Ideas & Objects would be to abstain from actively participating, particularly financially, and leave the burden to other producers to carry the weight of building the application without their direct participation. Applications such as People, Ideas & Objects can not be built with that method of participation.

The manner in which we solve this free rider problem is by assessing a late fee of 300% on top of our annual subscription fee. The annual subscription fees are due and payable on January 1 of the current year and need to be paid in full prior to the participation in the communities or prospective use of any software. Late fees are assessed on any outstanding annual subscription fees as of March 31, of the calendar year in which the fees were assessed. 2010 subscription fees were assessed at $1.00. 2011 subscription fees will also be assessed at $1.00. All fees, subscription and late, for all years, 2010 forward are to be paid before participation in communities can commence or prospectively use any software. Fees are assessed on the producers annual barrel of oil per equivalent production. (Eg. a producer currently producing 1 million boe / day would owe $1 million 2010 subscription fees and $3 million late fees, and $1 million 2011 subscription fees.)

The participation bonus is related to the late fee in that as firms that may have chosen to wait or hold back their participation in developing People, Ideas & Objects applications. That may have subsequently decide to join the development or begin using the application. Are then required to pay the subscription and late fees back to 2010 to the current date. As these lump sum payments are received by People, Ideas & Objects they offset the current years budgetary revenue requirements of the firm, therefore reducing the current years budget subscription fee value and therefore reducing those subscribing producers annual subscription fees for the subsequent subscription year. That’s the participation bonus.

It’s necessary that a project such as this deals with the free rider problem and at the same time reward those producers that participate early. Eliminating the Conflict

In the Preliminary Research Report, in addition to the advantages of using the Joint Operating Committee (JOC) we listed the disadvantages of the conflict between the JOC and the traditional hierarchy. What becomes clear in listing these disadvantages, is the overriding focus on compliance and governance by the hierarchy. Tax, SEC and Royalty requirements at times appear as the sole focus of the organizations. The operations within the JOC are a distant second in terms of dealing with the business of the producer.

I am speaking of course from the business perspective dictated by the use of the ERP system of the producer, not the technical perspective of the earth science and engineering production operation. The separation between the administration and the earth science and engineering focus within the producer is something that is being eliminated in the Draft Specification. Lets call this well known phenomenon of “no one reading from the same page”.

Oil and gas operations are unique based on their geographic and geological makeup. Applying blanket corporate strategies to these operations was possible in the easy energy era. In today’s marketplace the need to have unique operational strategies for each oil and gas property is a necessity and is accommodated in the Draft Specification. What is not needed is the conflict and confusion within the producer that is as a result of no one reading from the same page.

One of the breakthroughs from the research People, Ideas & Objects has conducted is that the differing operational strategies that are employed by each of the producers in a JOC are possible and appropriate. Each producer has a unique make up of assets and strategies and those can be enabled through the use of People, Ideas & Objects Draft Specification. Without the systems needed to support these differing strategies, the confusion and conflict will only grow, potentially in exponential ways.

The conflict between the separation of the compliance and governance of the hierarchy and the five frameworks of the JOC are reflected in each of the following points.

Introduces political and bureaucratic conflict.

This is the first and most damaging aspect of no one reading from the same page. When strategy, operations and administration are all moving in different directions within the organization, conflict is the result. The solution in the Draft Specification is provided by moving the compliance and governance from the hierarchy and aligning them with the legal, financial, operational decision making, cultural and communication frameworks of the JOC.

Compromises and muddles internal decisions.

What may be ideal strategy to optimize the property may be unknown to many of the decision makers within the producer firm. The operational decision making resides with the JOC. The decisions made by these organizations are not communicated effectively through the producer firm. Time necessary to make decisions and the bureaucracy have the effect of slowing the capacity of the producer.

Lacks the direct support from the hierarchy.

When no one is reading from the same page, it seems that the administration is moving in different directions from the technical groups. For cost reasons, having everyone reading from the same page isn’t a luxury but a necessity.

Successes and / or failures are not identified, shared or learned explicitly by any of the participating organizations. Knowledge is held tacitly, limited amounts of knowledge is codified or make explicit.

As decisions and strategies are confused, the ability to learn from the decisions is lost. Innovation is an iterative process based on the success and failure and the history of the property. In a science and applied engineering business that requires more scientific effort for each barrel of oil produced, the decision history and understanding of the underlying knowledge of the property become necessities.

Eliminates initiative and innovation. No tolerance for risk taking or experimentation that is required for innovation.

Building on the previous point regarding success or failures, when no one is held accountable for the decisions that were made, initiative and innovation fall to the sidelines.

No regulatory or internal financial reporting requirements.

The standard reporting of an interest in a JOC is fairly standard. People, Ideas & Objects have published a Technical Vision of how Information Technology will change in the near future. This Technical Vision foresees a substantial increase in the volume of data that is available to a producer. With the Performance & Evaluation and Analytics & Statistics modules, the producer can expand their use of this data in innovative ways.

The hierarchically based organization is an impediment to future progress.

This has been discussed by many. Although People, Ideas & Objects subscribe to this thinking, we are offering a viable solution by recognizing the Joint Operating Committee and developing an alternative governance structure in the Military Command & Control Metaphor in the Draft Specification.

Capacity to replace reserves has become logistically, operationally and organizationally constrained.

The long term perspective of a producer firm is reflected in their reserves. To expand their reserves a producer has a scientific capability, that in addition to their reserves, are its critical competitive advantages. These capabilities are the differences between success and failure.

Capacity to meet the market demand is diminishing.

The overall effect of these points is that the ability of the industry to expand its productive capability has stalled. As the world has more people entering the middle class, the lack of market supplies of energy will bring significant societal issues to all concerned.

Some Advantages of the JOC

Last week we began a comprehensive review of People, Ideas & Objects research and systems development. This review is focused around using the Joint Operating Committee (JOC) as the key organizational construct of the innovative oil and gas producer. It also appears, based on this blog’s analytics, that many of our readers may have been on vacation. I think this review provides substantial value to all our readers, and particularly for those that may have joined us in the past few years. To aggregate the posts that make up this review, please select the Review label on this blog. Last week we were able to summarize the four research questions that were answered in the Preliminary Research Report. Today’s post deals with the advantages of using the JOC.

The JOC is very much involved in the day to day activities of an oil and gas producer. What is surprising is that the ERP systems that are in use in oil and gas do not recognize the JOC. Not until such time as we develop the Draft Specification will we have the systems that align to the legal, financial, operational decision making, cultural and communication frameworks. All of the current ERP systems have been developed during the pre-Internet era. None of these vendors have approached the oil and gas industry from the point of view of the partnerships represented in the JOC, they only recognize the hierarchy of the individual producer. This prompted our assertion that SAP is the bureaucracy. The Preliminary Research Report noted the advantages of using the JOC are as follows.


  • All participants are motivated equally. Financial opportunity drives consensus.


Attaining a consensus when everyone is motivated on the basis of financial incentives is the optimal situation. It is for this reason alone that the JOC provides such strong support for building the systems defined in the Draft Specification. Developing the systems to recognize the decision rights within the JOC will enable the decisions to be made more efficiently and effectively.

Subsequent to the publication of the Draft Specification, and around the time that the iPad was introduced. People, Ideas & Objects asserted that we could use the iPad or other device to have the JOC representatives video conference the meetings. Each representative being in attendance irrespective of when and where they may be. With the software development capability which is a fundamental element of the People, Ideas & Objects offering, these meetings would be supported with automated software that implements the processes and procedures that are decided on by the committee. When the decision was made to re-enter a well to complete another zone, the AFE’s would then be automatically issued and become effective within the system. Fast, high quality decision-making with full implementation of the necessary processes will be the result of producers funding People, Ideas & Objects software developments and Community of Independent Service Providers.


  • The JOC is the legal, financial, operational decision making, cultural and communication foundation of the oil and gas industry. All the internal processes tacitly support this fact.


Moving the compliance and governance frameworks from the hierarchy to be in line with the JOC puts all the frameworks of both the producer and the committee into alignment. As decisions are made by the JOC they are implemented in accordance with the strategy, compliance and governance needs of each individual producer. Each producer employs their own strategy based on the unique makeup of their assets. Just because the producer voted for the recompletion of the other zone, does not impute any element of their corporate strategy or financial metrics to any of the other participating producers.


  • The participants in the JOC hold significant technical and managerial capabilities.


The people that represent the producer firm in the JOC are usually of broad business experience and educational background. Usually sourced from the earth science and engineering disciplines, their focus is developing the oil and gas assets held within the JOC. In many of the smaller producers it is frequently the president that represents the producer. Building the software that identifies and supports these key individuals is the beginning of making the producer more innovative.

The Joint Operating Committee is Critical

Starting with today’s post we will begin a process of reviewing the data, information and ideas that makes up People, Ideas & Objects and the Draft Specification. This will provide readers with a thorough understanding of the elements that make up this project. These posts can be aggregated by selecting the Review label.

People, Ideas & Objects began with the Preliminary Research Report’s hypothesis asking “if the Joint Operating Committee (JOC), modified with today’s information technologies, provides an oil and gas concern with the opportunity for advanced innovativeness.” The critical breakthrough in the research’s conclusion is the “industry standard JOC is the “natural” form of organization for oil and gas where the participants of the committee are supported and augmented through the diversity and availability of the remaining organizations team members. A greater alignment to this conceptual model would facilitate the desired innovation.”

So if this is how the industry operates why does it need People, Ideas & Objects Draft Specification, its software development capability and associated user communities? The difficulty is that today’s ERP systems do not recognize the existence of the Joint Operating Committee. This stands in contrast to the fact that the JOC is the legal, financial, cultural, communication and operational decision making framework of the industry. Every internal and external process of a producer tacitly recognizes these frameworks. However, the organizational focus has become centered on the compliance and governance frameworks of the royalty, tax and SEC requirements of the producer firm. What the Preliminary Research Report determined, and the Draft Specification implements, is the movement of the compliance and governance frameworks into alignment with the five frameworks of the JOC.

The Budget for Phase Two

Here we step into the truly surreal world of People, Ideas & Objects budgetary needs. The objective of Phase Two is to complete the Preliminary Specification. A task that has been defined as 100 man years of effort. A task that when complete would be a significant step forward for the innovative oil and gas producers. Costing this part of the development is relatively easy. We pay standard rates for contributions of $125.00 U.S. per hour. Therefore 100 man years at 1,760 hours per year totals $22 million. I could identify many other costs involved in supporting these developments, however.

Our revenue model sets an annual rental fee for each calendar year. That fee was set at $1.00 per barrel of oil equivalent for the 2010 year. Penalties are due and payable effective March 31 on any outstanding fee for that year. As of today’s date, each and every producer will be assessed the 300% penalty on their 2010 rental fees. These fees and penalties are to be paid in full by all producers irrespective of when they may join the developments. No participation or use of the software is permitted by any producer until all outstanding fees and penalties, back to January 1, 2010, are paid in full. The incentives are to participate early, and there are no financial benefits in waiting for other producers to pay disproportionately the fees and costs of these developments. Early participation is rewarded with a reduction of 75% of the total potential fees, (penalty avoidance) and greater participation in the definition of the software. (Or the ability to map the software to deal with the producers organization.)

To set a dollar amount to complete the Preliminary Specification is beyond what can be reasonably budgeted or defined. We are therefore proceeding with Phase Two on the basis that as producers join, and pay their required fees and penalties, we will proceed with the further development of the project. A pay as you go basis as producers join the development. The nature of the Preliminary Specification facilitates this stop-and-go type of development.

It is also time to set the fees for 2011. As in 2010, 2011 fees are set at $1.00 per barrel of oil equivalent. This fact alone shows the value proposition of this project. Our Revenue Model Part III

Continuing on with our discussion of People, Ideas & Objects revenue model. Today we discuss the impact of the revenue model, and the Draft Specification, has on the competitive advantages of the producer firm.

We start off with recognition that China is now the world’s number one consumer of energy. The demand for energy in the next several decades will be insatiable. The somewhat fixed number of earth scientists and engineers will have substantial business opportunities addressing this world demand. It is through a reorganization of these fixed human resources, by having People, Ideas & Objects software applications define and support enhanced divisions of labor and specialization, that this demand for energy will be satisfied.

Building systems that deal with the commercial interactions between the producer, society and the individuals that work in oil and gas, and the service industries, is beyond the direct concern of the producer. Yet, are a necessity of basic operations. If we agree that the competitive advantages of the producer firm are based on it’s unique composition of oil and gas leases, physical assets of the firm, and application of the firms earth science and engineering capabilities. The producer will remain involved and focused on the development of efficient software systems to identify and support those competitive advantages. Much in the same manner as society and individuals will work to develop those same systems to meet their needs.

Therefore, the producers decision to financially support these developments affect society and individuals. The producer firm receives 100% of the direct revenues from oil and gas sales. Allocation of a portion of these oil and gas revenues towards an initiative like People, Ideas & Objects can not be evaluated based on its competitive return at the producer level. Everyone is familiar with one or more software development or implementation projects that were terminated as the result of a lack of long term funding. These failures have little to do with the quality of the project or the people that were behind it. Over time the sense of urgency that the project may have put forward fades as does the financial support. Approaching a project with the scope of People, Ideas & Objects, without having an answer to a fading sense of urgency would be a failure.

The question therefore becomes, how does the revenue model of People, Ideas & Objects 1) sustain these communities throughout the development cycle and 2) provide these communities with the software tools they need to expand economic output? We provide this by way of the inherent promise or guarantee of this project. That being, this software development, and associated communities, provide the innovative oil and gas producer with the most profitable means of oil and gas operations. The profitable nature arising as a result of the expanded oil and gas output, based on the enhanced division of labor enabled with the People, Ideas & Objects application, and, the value proposition we have put forward.

Our Revenue Model Part II

In this our second instalment that details our Revenue Model, we apply and extend Professor Jurgen Habermas’ 1960’s theory of different knowledge interests. Building on yesterdays discussion of People, Ideas & Objects value proposition, and targeting the oil and gas producers as the sole source of revenue, this post will delve into the difficult question regarding what we need these systems for.

We need to ask ourselves what we need these systems for. Are we developing systems that manage the commercial operations of an oil and gas producer? Of course we are, but that does not address the societal and individual needs of these systems. If we continue to look at just the needs of the producers, then we are leaving many needs unaddressed. Society and individuals are critical elements of a successful oil and gas industry. For example society benefits by having producers and the service industries efficiently interact and develop profitable operations, and individuals create innovative solutions to the demand they see for their services. Overall organizations, individuals and society benefit by an increased and expanding division of labor and specialization.  In today’s globalized, high technology workplace, an expanded division of labor and specialization can be more efficiently created through a software development capability like that described by People, Ideas & Objects in its Draft Specification.

When we concern ourselves with the economic output of the oil and gas industry. To expand that output requires that we organize based on greater levels of specialization and a further division of labor. The responsibility for increasing output does not fall to society, individuals or organizations in isolation but to all three. Therefore it is reasonable to state that what we need these systems to address society, individuals and organizations needs. I do not foresee the further development of the division of labor occurring without the active involvement of systems development. In a somewhat deliberate manner where all groups are represented.

If we look critically at the division of labor, and eliminate some of the constraints to expanding it further. Constraints like the limitations of working within one firm or one Joint Operating Committee (JOC). If an individual has the capacity to apply their skills to a task for a geographical region that includes 100 producers and 200 JOC’s, the efficiencies could be substantial. The ability to manage a task in this fashion doesn’t exist within our current organizational context. Maybe it should.

Following on the logic of the previous post, where the producer firms are the sole source of the revenue for People, Ideas & Objects and associated communities. Sharing the input of these systems development across society, individuals and the organizations might appear to be inconsistent with the reality that 100% of the funds are coming from the producers.

That’s why the People, Ideas & Objects revenue model shares the one time development costs across the subscribing producers. Just because the producer firms receive 100% of the proceeds of oil and gas sales, doesn't mean that they earn 100% of the revenues of the oil and gas sales. Individuals and society have a role and responsibility in these systems and therefore, these need to be considered irrespective of the desires of the producer firms. We’re not going to develop systems that address the needs of society, individuals and organizations when producers have a disproportionate influence due to their control of the revenue stream.

To sustain this software development requires that we cease being subjected to the individual decisions of one or more producers. A company that chooses not to proceed with the development or implementation of these technologies can not hold up the greater benefit of all concerned. Essentially I am stating that the decision to support these communities needs to be made where appropriate representation considers the needs of all concerned. Looking at the cost benefit analysis of supporting this software from the point of view of only one producer misses the benefits to society and individuals.

Habermas theories deal with the issues of power, influence and most importantly emancipation.

But when it comes to using science or computers to change the relations of power in our society, when emancipation is put forth as a knowledge or development interest, then the question of values becomes more controversial. Who is to be emancipated, and from whom? Who is to loose power, and who is to gain? And how can it be the business of scientists or computer professionals to take part in a political struggle for power?

Our Revenue Model Part I

When looking for the revenues for People, Ideas & Objects and its associated user communities, all paths lead to the oil and gas producers. This is the logical choice as they are also the primary benefactor from the use of the applications and communities development. In latter posts we will document that society and individuals also derive benefits. However, oil and gas is a primary industry that generates over $3 trillion in annual revenues. It is the source of value generation for itself and a variety of industries that provide it with products and services. It is therefore logical and appropriate that we focus on producers to generate the revenues for these communities. So how is it that People, Ideas & Objects and these communities raise the funds for these software products and associated services. The answer to this and other questions is what will be defined as our “Revenue Model” in this and subsequent blog posts.  


With these points in mind it is important to restate our value proposition. People, Ideas & Objects provides the oil and gas producer with a user focused software development capability. The costs incurred in developing and hosting the software application are charged to the industry once. Providing a value proposition that is substantially more competitive then any other ERP vendor. To cover the development and associated user community costs, use of the software by the producer requires payment of all of the fees retroactively to January 1, 2010. For 2010 these fees were determined to be $1 per barrel of oil equivalent production per day. Based on these factors, a producer that produces 50,000 barrels of oil per day ($1.4 billion in annual revenues.) would be assessed $50,000.00 for the 2010 calendar year. Motivation to participate in a timely fashion is provided by assessing 300% penalties for any payments that remain outstanding after March 31 of the billing year. All fees and penalties from 2010 forward are to be paid prior to the producers use of the software. These revenues will be used to offset the costs of developing the software. Users are not charged for their use of the software.

The $1.00 fee that is assessed on each barrel of oil equivalent could theoretically generate $120 million during 2010 for People, Ideas & Objects. Our motivation is to expand the volume of energy that the fee is assessed upon. Raising the rate assessed per barrel would also increase our revenue, however, increasing the volume of energy production represented in our assessment base provides a stronger value proposition for all concerned. It is critical to recall that the costs associated with the second copy of the software is zero. Therefore the costs of development are allocated over the entire subscribing producer base. The producer firm receives, just in the first year, a potentially $120 million software application for a small portion of the actual costs.  


At an average price of $77.00 per barrel of oil. The percentage costs of the People, Ideas & Objects fee for 2010 equals 1 / 28,105 = 0.0035%. Determination of the annual fee is based on the projected costs of the software development and communities plus an element of profit for People, Ideas & Objects. Inherent in this pricing is the belief that the applications are never considered static, but are in perpetual development, therefore the firm remains profitable and motivated to continuously improve the applications.

Asynchronous Process Management Success

One of the cornerstones of the People, Ideas & Objects “Technical Vision” is Asynchronous Process Management (APM). I have described this type of functionality as it relates to communications, as a phone call is synchronous, and a letter would be asynchronous. The letter provides the communicator time to interact more deeply and to contemplate the response more thoroughly. Applying this communications metaphor to Process Management is directly applicable.


In a recent post we discussed the scenario around the timing of the voting and implementation of a plan to increase natural gas production. Where the participants within a Joint Operating Committee were asked to vote on a prescribed course of action. The description in that post imputed the implementation of the plan would be immediate, during the virtual meeting. In the real world, there would need to be time for each participant to consider their decision. The ability for participants to take the time to think what their next action will be, and based on those actions, implement and complete the appropriate management of the earlier initiated process.

Technology has expanded significantly in the past ten years. Particularly with respect to having multiple threads and multiple cores of application processing. Simply defining when an applications process can be broken down into multiple steps is easily handled by the developer and today’s advanced compilers. The problem with this processing is that the timing of each operation is unpredictable and therefore the sequence of when the program will be completed is random. In the oil and gas situation where partners were voting on a proposal for further operations, those operations would not be able to be commenced until the voting was completed, or adequate votes in the affirmative were received.

Today, the software developer has tools that provide the ability to control the timing of dependent processing in the software. This opens the world of systems development to higher levels of performance, processing tasks in parallel shortens the processing time required, and allows for advanced Asynchronous Process Management such as the People, Ideas & Objects technical vision.

Location, location, location.

As in the retail business, location is the key. With January 1, 2011 being the start date of the development of the Preliminary Specification. We need to consider the locations in which the People, Ideas & Objects operations will be based. Settling on which areas of operations helps to further define the “what” and “how” of the applications development. The choice of locations will also have influence on the many positions that will be available with People, Ideas & Objects.


The two areas we are able to settle the location are; the region for the developers and the location for the cloud computing infrastructure. Dealing with the computing infrastructure first, it has been decided that these resources will be based in Houston. Although the speed of light would limit the choice of location anywhere on earth, Houston provides several advantages. The primary reason is of course that Houston is the centre of the energy universe. Establishing a central location for the People,Ideas & Objects infrastructure and staffing is the second reasoning for choosing Houston. Whether it is supporting users and members of the Community of Independent Service Providers, Houston will be the base for these resources. The specific positions that are based in Houston include, the Chief Operating Officer, Vice-President Business Development, Vice-President Community Development, and Vice-President Infrastructure.


The development group is likewise constrained by the speed of light. Setting up a primary location for these resources needs to consider access to a large community of developers. That’s Silicon Valley. Recall we are Oracle customer. And when we consider the location of Oracle’s resources, headquartered in Redwood Shores California, Oracle has the majority of their development and technical resources available in Silicon Valley. These resources will be headed up by the Vice-President Development position noted here.

The Scope of the Application

In a recent post we talked about the scope of the development in terms of the Preliminary Specification. Today I want to discuss the scope of the application itself. It may seem that these are the same points, however, I think that there is enough of a difference to warrant this post.


To provide the innovative oil and gas producer with the software tools they need, the end user needs to be involved in the design and development of those systems. People, Ideas & Objects is focused on the end user in its developments. Organized around a comprehensive vision of how and what the systems consist of, the Draft Specification details the vision of the application. Organizing the user in these developments has been our priority throughout these developments. Anyone proposing the development of systems for innovative oil and gas producers would have to include the user in this manner. Yet People, Ideas & Objects is the only software developer that is focused on the user. Does SAP provide a comprehensive development of systems based on user input? Do the current bureaucracies believe the issues of the oil and gas industry can be solved without comprehensive user based software developments?


People, Ideas & Objects fills the traditional “ERP” or Enterprise Resource Planning classification of applications. It is a comprehensive solution designed to manage the operations of Joint Operating Committees and producers needs for accounting, administration and management. The Draft Specification defines the general framework of the application. It is anticipated that most, if not all, employees of a producer firm, the service sector and partners of Joint Operating Committees will have access to the application. The various disciplines that are employed in an oil and gas firm, geologists, engineers, landman, accountants and others are included in this definition.


In the People, Ideas & Objects software applications we seek to capture the ways and means of the optimal innovative oil and gas producer. The understanding of the industry is beyond the scope of a handful of contributors and involves the multiple disciplines noted earlier. The collaborative output of the application is well beyond the scope of one individuals understanding of the industry. Therefore clarification and compromise will be a necessary and difficult part of the process. Using advanced business techniques, focused on the conflicts and contradictions that arise, the output will resolve many of the issues within the industry and its application to the Draft Specification. This is a business design process that will involve literally everyone and anyone with experience and understanding of the oil and gas industry. More specifically it is a place where people can contribute their ideas and build their own service based offering in support of the innovative oil and gas producer and end users of the developing People, Ideas & Objects software.


Producer firms also have a critical role to fill in these developments. Their participation helps to define the applications scope of operations. Will the applications include the geographical regions of each area of operations of a producer firm? Will the applications include the types of oil and gas operations that the producer participates in. Without direct participation of the producers in funding and defining the scope of the application, the producer may or may not have all their regions and operations covered. This why the producer needs to participate in these developments now. With the Preliminary Specification set to start on January 1, 2011, and include the scope of the application, now is the time for producers to begin the process of supporting and participating in these developments.


Adding to the scope of the application is the market definitions of the producer firms targeted. The application is proposed to work for International Oil Companies (IOC’s), National Oil Companies (NOC’s), Independents and Start-ups. Using the Joint Operating Committee as the key organizational construct provides value for all producers in the industry. To preclude any market definition would unnecessarily limit the scope and value of the application. Joint Operating Committee’s include all types of producers. Producers need to participate in these communities and ensure their operations geographical and operational needs are met. If you have comprehensive operations, working within these communities at the onset provides real value.
